Twenty years at the mixing desk

Production Solutions is what happens when a broadcast engineer spends two decades learning every corner of live production, and then a castle broadcast turns it into a company.

From the City to the stage

Tobin Taylor's first job in broadcast was streaming debt deals for the investment banks of the City of London. Precise, unforgiving work, with an audience of people who notice a dropped frame. It was a foundation in doing things properly, and it has never left him.

What followed was the more colourful part. At Stream UK (now Stream AMG) he ran video and engineering for the Red Bull Bedroom Jam series from its very first show: shooting and cutting the VT, building the set in an actual bedroom, rigging, sound-checking and streaming the live show, all inside a single day, with a crew of four. It was a masterclass in doing everything, fast, with no safety net, and it toured the length of the UK.

The years after brought a range most engineers never touch. Overseeing the transmission of a Madonna performance from Paris to the front page of YouTube. Live gigs with Florence + the Machine, Muse, Everything Everything and Bombay Bicycle Club. Heading the live encoding and production department at Streaming Tank, streaming fashion shows for Burberry and Topshop. Boiler Room sets across Europe and as far as India, Minecon in the United States, One Young World in Montreal, and corporate broadcasts as far away as Thailand.

The pull was always the room, not the desk.
Off the clock, still at the barrier.

The esports years

As a freelancer, Tobin became a fixture of the UK gaming scene. At Insomnia Gaming Festival he started as vision mixer and director on the esports stage and finished as the main stage's overall producer and show caller, running the stage, calling the shows, and training the volunteer crews who kept the festival's productions on air. Teaching the next generation of event production people remains one of the things he is proudest of.

Around the festivals came the rest: years of Pokémon international events, several RuneFests for Jagex, the Nintendo UK Versus series, two years on Race to World First from the Red Bull Gaming Sphere, and 24-hour endurance broadcasts for Le Mans, Spa-Francorchamps and the Nürburgring. During COVID came remote cloud production galleries, entire event infrastructures running online when nothing could run in person.

And the list keeps growing. Engineer-in-charge of the on-site broadcast for the VCT EMEA Valorant series, three months of weekly flights to a temporary studio inside the Berlin Messe, linked live to Riot's production facility in Dublin. Producer and live director of the robot battles at the Games of the Future 2025. Support engineer for High Viz Media Group on a Call of Duty major at Paris La Défense, 2026.

The castle that started a company

In 2020, Larian Studios needed to announce and launch Early Access for Baldur's Gate 3, and to prove to a fanbase with decades of attachment to that name that the game was in the right hands. The answer became the Panel From Hell, a series of live shows that started as a four-way video call from Larian's own offices and grew, show by show, into full theatrical broadcasts. By the third edition the production was live from the vaults beneath Gravensteen castle in Ghent, recreating the game in first-person perspective, in real time, steered by live Twitch votes.

It was the biggest job of Tobin's freelance career, and the paperwork that followed made the decision for him. Production Solutions was born, and went on to deliver the entire Panel From Hell series, right up to the show that launched one of the most successful video games ever made. Both Tobin and Production Solutions are credited in the game.

How we work

Ask the people who hire us and a pattern emerges: a safe pair of hands, a stickler for understanding how a system should work before working out how it might break, and, in their words, someone you are not afraid to be stuck in the trenches with. We do not reach for the easiest solution. We reach for the right one, and we stay easy to work with while we do it.

Production Solutions runs from Brussels, where Tobin moved a decade ago, and works across Europe and worldwide. Off the clock you will find him behind a video game or one of an alarmingly large collection of board games, which is to say: when we broadcast gaming events, we are fans in the truck, not just crew.

Mid-show in somebody else's hall. Everyone on cans, everyone watching the same clock.
